The Polhem lock is finally filled up and instead it’s Nils Ericson’s lock that is used for water regulation. Boat traffic will again be led through Söderström under the name Karl Johan slussen. Slussen is also the name of a Stockholm Metro station, named after the nearby locks and added infrastructural network - serving the red and green lines of the Stockholm Metro. There is a bus terminal and a train station from where several local train lines depart for the southern parts of Stockholm and its surroundings. Slussen is also the name of a Stockholm Metro station, named after the nearby locks and added infrastructural network - serving the red and green lines of the Stockholm Metro. Slussen, built in 1642, is the lock that separates the sea from the fresh water of Lake Mälaren. In 1935 the lock was extensively covered by Lundborg’s and William-Olsson’s “four-leaf clover” concrete road structure, now dangerously eroded. Slussen’s lock allows boats to transit between Lake Mälaren and the bay leading to the Baltic Sea (Saltsjön). The lock also acts as one of the gates between freshwater (Mälaren) and saltwater areas (Baltic Sea), thereby playing a key role in the provision of clean water. The New Slussen lock has been designed for what has been deemed an acceptable level of risk. The level of risk New Slussen can withstand from the Lake Mälaren and the Baltic Sea bay is: • a 1-in-10,000 year inflow of freshwater into the lake (from extreme rainfall and rapid snow melt, for instance) combined with a rise in the mean water

1935 Karl Johan Lock Stockholm had around 420,000 residents in 1920. The bridges at Slussen were still the only route linking north and south Stockholm, resulting in traffic chaos.
