Ivo Andric manages to concentrate a reflection on the human condition in general and the peculiarity of the Balkans specifically in this masterful account of the history of a bridge. Two great take-aways: progress is always seen as evil or at best sinful by some. No matter what you do to better the human condition, someone will always oppose it. Ivo Andric narrates the building of and the happenings on the bridge from the time of its inception by an Istambul vizir (born near it), and some of the more interesting characters, up the first World War. It is a steady book, well written and unusual. Very rarely, a novel goes on for so long in terms of time in the novel.
